Clean water

Clean water - A luxury for the poor

More than a billion people have little or no access to clean drinking water. More and more regions of the earth suffer from chronic water shortages which lead to sanitation emergencies. The lack of water primarily affects the poorest people. In developing countries around two million children under five die every year from diarrhoea caused by drinking dirty water – 5,000 every day. These are shocking figures for everyone – but unfortunately they are also true figures. Provision of drinking water and hygienic sanitation remains one of the biggest challenges facing human kind.Contaminated water and low levels of hygiene are some of the main causes of high infant mortality rates in many countries. Pathogens and parasites which cause illness spread especially quickly where there is a lack of clean water and sanitation, pathogens causing illness and parasites spread especially quickly. What must be done?Like many other aid organizations, we support water projects as well as educational programmes on the improvement of hygiene in Indonesia, a developing country. In the small, remote villages, we bring residents and administration together to better organize their water provision. As well as installing equipment, this is also about education, for example, explaining the hygiene methods such as hand washing with soap, which can reduce diarrhetic illnesses by 40%.We make our contribution to this by building wells and water pipes, and installing putting pumps and filters. Of course none of this is possible without the help of the citizens, companies and institutions.

Please, help us put an end to children dying because of problems with water!
